Two of the most hotly contested mayoral races in recent memory highlight a busy election day in Pittsfield and North Adams.
In addition, both Berkshire County cities have 15 candidates vying for nine seats in their respective City Council races. Pittsfield also has seven people vying for six seats on the School Committee.
Pittsfield polling places will be open today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while North Adams registered voters can cast ballots between 9 a. m. and 7 p.m.
While the two mayoral races have four distinct candidates, the contests have their similarities.
Mayor James M. Ruberto is seeking to become only the fourth Pittsfield mayor to win four consecutive terms since the city began electing mayors 118 years ago. Ruberto's challenger, Ward 6 Councilor Daniel L. Bianchi, is a veteran of city government having served as Pittsfield's finance director and treasurer from 1988 to 1993. Bianchi is giving up a 10-year run on the City Council to become Pittsfield's 36th mayor.
