PITTSFIELD -- Two city road improvements will benefit from the latest round federal stimulus money.

Pittsfield is receiving $2.8 million through the state Executive Office of Transportation toward the resurfacing of Barker and Valentine roads.

However, the funding won't cover the projects' estimated total price tag of more than $3 million, according to city officials.

"The cost estimate of the projects far exceeded the stimulus money," Public Works and Utilities Commissioner Bruce I. Collingwood said. "The city might have to put in about $500,000, but we have the capital to do that."

Once the city completes both project designs, MassHighway will actually bid the repaving which should begin in the spring of 2010. Barker Road is nearly 3 miles long while Valentine Road is less than 2 miles in length.

"Drivers aren't going to see any changes to the two roads," Collingwood said. "Maybe some sidewalk improvement, but no major widening of the roads."

City officials had hoped to receive enough federal stimulus money to also repave First Street and Holmes Road, but the cost estimate just for Holmes Road is more than $9 million.
